My favourite young memory is when I was at Rockcliffe Primary School, when I was 8 years old.

In 1953 Queen Elizabeth visited Whitley Bay and drove along the promenade to Tynemouth.

Our school was 20 yards from the route so Miss Dobson shepherded her class onto the pavement and we had a prime position as the queen sailed past in her Rolls Royce and waved at us.

In 1967 I had passed my degree exams and was awarded it at a ceremony at the Albert Hall.

Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother was the Chancellor of London University at that time and she presented every student with their certificate. She shook hands with all the doctors and MSc but the basic graduates like me got a tilt of the head – and her enigmatic smile.

John grew up in Whitley Bay in Northumberland, UK.

He travelled widely when first starting to work.

He  then met Bev , now his wife and they have two grown up sons. Alan and Philip

I recall this photograph. The suit I was wearing was a pale blue and the chair was placed on a table so the photographer had to lift me up.
